I love this song, the melody, the lyrics, everything is so catchy and perfect. I had to translate it to english as it's another masterpiece by the brazillian singer and composer Lenine, and I love his work, not only because we were born in the same state (Pernambuco), but also because he's such a talented singer, player and composer. His messages need to be appreciated by the whole world and there's no better way to do it than by translating it all to english. The song's name means "The last sunset", and it indeed feels like it.
The lyrics are showing the melancholy of the lyrical subject after a break up, expressing his sorrow whilst everything around him is a reminder of his beloved one. That feeling that the World is all gone and you feel abandoned, alone amidst a crowd, unimportant. The lyrical subject is clearly missing that beloved one, feeling like the last man in the world, on the day that "the Sun" (The light that illuminates his heart) died.
This song gives me goosebumps when I hear. Also, there's a great play on words that can't work that well in englsih, so I'll explain it here: "A Lua nascendo por entre os fios dos teus cabelos, por entre os dedos da minha mão passaram certezas e dúvidas". The hard part of translating it is that there are several messages within the same string of lyrics. Literally, it means "The Moon rising between the wires/strands of your hair, between the fingers in my hands, passed certanties and doubts". But there are several sentences in subtext, like: "The Moon rising between the (pole) wires", "The Moon rising between the strands of your hair", "The Moon rising between my fingers", "The strands of your hair between my fingers", "Between my fingers passed certanties and doubts", "Between the strands of your hair passed certanties and doubts". That is a mastery of words that I'm yet to get close to, but I admire profoundly.
With no further ado, let's translate:
Literal translation:
The wave still breaks at the beach
Sea foam mixes with the wind
On the day that you went away
I kept on missing what wasn't even gone
Even remembering what I didn't live
Thinking on the two of us
On the day that you went away
I kept on missing what wasn't even gone
Even remembering what I didn't live
Thinking on the two of us
I remember the shell in your ears
Bringing the sound of the sea on the sand
On the day that you went away
I stayed alone, watching the Sun die
Between the ruins of Santa Cruz*
Remembering the two of us
On the day that you went away
I stayed alone, watching the Sun die
Between the ruins of Santa Cruz*
Remembering the two of us
The abandoned buildings
The empty roads
Burnt oil, the beams on the sand
The Moon rising between the strands of your hair
Between the fingers on my hand
Certanties and doubts passed
'Cause on the day that you went away
I stayed alone in this world, without having anyone else
The last man on the day that the Sun has died
'Cause on the day that you went away
I stayed alone in this world, without having anyone else
The last man on the day that the Sun has died
'Cause on the day that you went away
I stayed alone in this world, without having anyone else
The last man on the day that the Sun has died
Translation to sing:
The wave still breaks at the beach
Sea foam mixes with the wind
On the day that you went away
I kept on missing what wasn't even gone
Remembering even what I hadn't lived
Thinking on us
On the day that you went away
I kept on missing what wasn't even gone
Remembering even what I hadn't lived
Thinking on us
I remember the shell in your ears
Bringing the sound of the sea on sand
On the day that you went away
I stayed alone, watching the Sun die
Between the ruins of Santa Cruz*
Remembering us
On the day that you went away
I stayed alone, watching the Sun die
Between the ruins of Santa Cruz*
Remembering us
The buildings all abandoned
The roads with no one
Burnt oil, the beams on the sand
The Moon rising between the strands of your hair
Between the fingers on my hand
Passed certanties and doubts
'Cause on the day that you went away
I stayed alone in this world, without having anyone
The last man on the day that the Sun has died
'Cause on the day that you went away
I stayed alone in this world, without having anyone
The last man on the day that the Sun has died
'Cause on the day that you went away
I stayed alone in this world, without having anyone
The last man on the day that the Sun has died
*It is (probably) refering to the Fort Orange (Also known as "Fort of Santa Cruz de Itamaracá", but popularly called "Fort Orange"), it's located in the island of Itamaracá, Pernambuco, Brazil. The structure was abandoned for a long time until reformed recently, still in a partially ruined state. It's a historical fort that played an important role during the dutch invasions of the portuguese colonies, in the XVII century, recaptured by brazillinas eventually.
